Degree and Certificate Programs

BA: General Music

BA: General Music

For students who plan to become a composer, conductor, college music teacher, theorist, musicologist, arranger, music librarian, or critic.

BA with Music Education

BA with Music Education

For students preparting for the New York State Initial Teacher Certification in Music PreK-12.

BMus: Performance

BMus: Performance

A program equivalent to the training available in a conservatory course of study. Admission to this professional performance program is by competitive audition for qualified instrumentalists and singers.

BMus with Music Education Certificate

BMus with Music Education Certificate

For students who have been accepted into the Bachelor of Music program but also wish to pursue teacher certification. Typically this will require at least one additional year of study in order to meet all requirements including student teaching.

Master of Music in Classical Performance

Master of Music in Classical Performance

Includes private instruction, ensembles, studies in historical performance practice, and other courses geared to the needs of classical performers. A student may major in a standard orchestral, keyboard, or early-music instrument, in classical guitar, voice, or conducting (orchestral or choral).

Master of Music in Jazz Studies

Master of Music in Jazz Studies

includes private instruction, jazz ensembles, studies in jazz harmony, improvisation, arranging, recording techniques, and other courses suited to the needs of today's jazz musician. Students may major in either jazz performance or jazz composition.

Master of Arts in Music

Provides necessary training for classical composers, for those who wish to pursue doctoral studies in musicology or theory, and for students who plan to enter other music-related fields. Students may major in composition, theory, or music history (musicology).

Master of Science in Music Education (Leading to Professional Certification)

Provides advanced professional training for those who already hold NYS Initial Teacher Certification and are teaching or seeking positions in choral, instrumental and/or general music in elementary and secondary schools.

Master of Music in Jazz Studies

Includes private instruction, jazz ensembles, studies in jazz harmony, improvisation, arranging, recording techniques, and other courses suited to the needs of today's jazz musician. Students may major in either jazz performance or jazz composition.

Music Education: Post-Baccalaureate - Advanced Certificate Program (Leading to Initial Certification)

for prospective students who hold an undergraduate degree in music and wish to obtain New York State Initial Teacher Certification in Music, but lack preparation in education.

Graduate Certificate and Advanced Diploma for Classical Performance

For classical instrumentalists/vocalists who wish to advance their study beyond the MA degree before entering a DMA program or professional positions, or for international students who possess advanced degrees in music from overseas institutions and are ready for advanced musical performance training in the United States, but do not have the required English language skills to enter an MA program.

About the Aaron Copland School of Music

The Aaron Copland School of Music (ACSM) is located in Flushing, New York. The School of Music is part of Queens College, of the leading senior college in the City University of New York. Queens College is a liberal Arts college, boasting excellent programs in many areas, and the School of Music is the jewel in the crown. ACSM offers three different types of music undergraduate degrees; general music (BA), Performance (B.Mus), and Music Education (BA/Ed). All our undergraduate students go through rigorous academic courses in theory, history, ear-training, sight-singing and performance. All students in all undergraduate programs take private lessons as part of their degree requirements. Our newly renovated music building provides our students with a welcoming atrium, Steinway pianos in all practice rooms, a music library which has more than 35,000 scores, 30,000 books and 20,000 recordings, and an award-winning LeFrak Concert Hall, celebrated for its acoustics and the Maynard-Walker Memorial organ. ACSM produces over 300 concerts a year including recitals, orchestra, choir, ensembles, new music, early music concerts, and opera productions. ACSM offers a first-class curriculum, renowned faculty, and an extraordinary facility, at an extremely affordable tuition (full-time, in-state undergraduate tuition is currently $5,130, plus fees for a full year of study.)
